Thousands of South Koreans are expected to take to the streets of Seoul today amid an increasingly chaotic political situation following a failed attempt to arrest ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is accused of “rebellion” for trying to impose martial law in early December, Agence France-Presse and BTA reported.

Since early afternoon, gatherings of his opponents and supporters have been planned in the city center, near the capital’s main square and in particular in front of Yun’s home.
Yesterday, about 200 soldiers and security officials blocked attempts to arrest him, and the operation to detain him, which began early in the morning, was called off after about six hours of negotiations and tension.
The investigative agency has until Monday to execute the arrest warrant issued by the court against Yun to force him to answer questions about his failed attempt to impose martial law.
In a statement released yesterday, the investigators asked interim President Choi Sang-mok to support the arrest warrant.
For its part, the Constitutional Court has set January 14 as the starting date for the case, which will confirm or reject Yun’s impeachment. The court is due to rule by mid-June.
Yun has so far refused all summonses related to his martial law, and his security guards have repeatedly obstructed police searches despite having warrants, AFP reports. His lawyers, for their part, have condemned the attempted arrest as “illegal” and have vowed to take legal action to challenge it.
The ousted president is still defending his shocking decision of December 3 despite the serious political turmoil it has caused.
