Russian leader confirms his country used new Oreshnik ballistic missile

Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised the prospect of possible strikes on third countries for the first time, saying his country had tested a new medium-range missile in a strike on Ukraine on Tuesday. He warned that Moscow could use it against countries that have allowed Kiev to fire their missiles at Russian territory, the Associated Press and TASS reported.

Putin said in a televised address to the nation that today’s Russian strike on Ukraine was in response to Ukrainian strikes earlier this week on Russian territory with British and American missiles.

In his statement today, he said that Russia believes it has the right to use weapons against countries that allow Ukraine to use their weapons to strike Russian targets.

“We believe we have the right to use our weapons against the military facilities of countries that allow their weapons to be used against our targets,” he said. The president warned that his country was ready for any development of events, although it would prefer to resolve conflicts by peaceful means.

“It is in vain that someone still doubts this. There will always be an answer,” Putin stressed, quoted by TASS. The president stressed that “it was not Russia, but the United States that destroyed the system of international security and, continuing to fight, clinging to its hegemony, is pushing the world towards global conflict.”

The tests of the Oreshnik missile system were conducted in response to the aggressive actions of NATO countries in its relations with Russia.

The Russian leader announced that Russia would give advance warnings before strikes on other countries to allow for the safe evacuation of citizens, the Associated Press reports.

Putin promised that when using powerful Russian weapons such as the Oreshnik missiles, the Russian Federation would warn civilians in advance to leave the danger zone.

“Of course, choosing, if necessary and as a retaliatory measure, a target to be hit by such systems as the Oreshnik on the territory of Ukraine, we will offer civilians in advance, as well as ask citizens of friendly countries who are there, to leave the danger zones,” the head of state was quoted as saying by TASS.
