Recently, as an alternative to (or simply a supplement to) the explanation proposed by De Jordan /1/ for the transcription of Sclavi/Sclavini, we have proposed a hypothesis for representing the sound “sh” by the two-letter “sk”
/2/. At that time, we had no idea who this Slavic tribe could be, which bore the title
(name) “Shlavi” or “Shlavini”. More recently, the suggestion came unexpectedly, from an article by P. Goliyski
/3/, in which the author visually stimulates us by spelling “Sclavi” according to the Arabic model (without the vowels) – sklb.
“Saqaliba”/”saqalibi” has been familiar to us for years, but it took me a glance at someone who reads (albeit slowly) Arabic writing to see in sklb the potential shlb–>shvb.
