The unstable executive branch and the division around the war in Ukraine – a risk to national security”

“There is a tactical consideration in not actively talking about national security, given the situation in the country and the need for a deeper debate to explain the issues of war and peace. These things cannot be explained in such a tense situation.”

This was told to BNR by Boyko Noev, former Minister of Defense and Ambassador of Bulgaria to NATO.

He added that defense will hardly find an adequate place in the country’s budget for this year.

According to him, Kiril Petkov’s government has failed to solidify the image of statesmen and many mistakes have been made:

“The arrest of Boyko Borisov is not just a frivolous personal act, but a violation of the law. If this was done outside the law, then Kiril Petkov must bear some responsibility… Kiril Petkov and Assen Vassilev must step down, this is the last obstacle to the creation of an expert government. The figure of the Prime Minister must be agreed upon and this must be an established name, a person who understands how to govern the state.”

In the program “Nedelya 150” Noev pointed out two main risks to the national security of our country – the instability of the executive branch and the war in Ukraine:

“The executive branch does not allow us to fully utilize the advantage of belonging to the EU and NATO. We are losing influence, material resources, security. The war is not so much a war as a division of Bulgarian society, which strengthens the influence of Russia. Its strategic interest is to create a corridor of influence from Bulgaria to Serbia and Hungary. To split the southern flank of NATO and this part of the EU. Disagreements in parliament, the clash of interpersonal interests, petty issues and quarrels do not allow the good guys to prevail.”

According to him, there are factors that prevent GERB – UDF and PP – DB from reaching an agreement – one of which is Boyko Borisov’s fear of illegal repression, which is justified:

“Therefore, he should be most interested in creating such mechanisms in the parliament for controlling lawlessness, so that he can submit to justice under an objective prosecutor’s office and judicial system, where he will be sure that he will be acquitted… Judicial reform is the principle and most important foundation on which further agreement can be built and guarantees for MPs for their immunity can be created, until the prosecutor’s office is changed, until lawlessness is eliminated.”
