There is currently no definitive statement on the cause of the sudden termination of connections on the 1,172-kilometer telecommunications cable between Helsinki and Rostock.
An underwater telecommunications cable connecting Finland with Germany was cut today for reasons still unclear, Finnish technology company Cinia announced, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
“A fault was discovered today in the C-Lion1 submarine cable between Finland and Germany, causing disruption of services,” the company said in a statement.
“The initial assessment” is that the cable is “broken” as all optical connections to the cable have been cut, a Sinia official told reporters.
“It is not possible to assess the cause of the cable break at this time, but the fault would not have occurred without an external impact,” the technology company added.
The sudden loss of connections suggests that the cable was completely severed by an external force, although a physical inspection has not yet been carried out, added Reuters, citing Sinia Chief Executive Ari-Jussi Knaapiella.
The German government declined to comment.
The 1,172-kilometre (730-mile) fibre-optic cable has connected Helsinki to Rostock in northeastern Germany since 2016.
In October 2023, the Balticconnector undersea gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was to be closed after it was damaged by the anchor of a Chinese cargo ship.
Finland has stepped up monitoring for incidents in the Baltic Sea since the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine.
